Five Steps to Successful Surgery
Prepare yourself for this major step in your life

So you're thinking about plastic surgery? Congratulations! Plastic surgery is one of the most cost-effective, positive things you can do for yourself. Surgery's benefits far outweigh those of laser treatments, creams, and injections. Most of the common non-surgical treatments offer only limited and temporary benefits at a high long-term cost. Here are some suggestions to guide you towards the successful experience that you deserve.
Check your general health
The only time plastic surgery should be considered is when your health is optimal. If you are physically active and don't take medication you probably do not require specific medical clearance. All women over 40 require annual mammograms. If you have any medical or mental health conditions, it is wise to consult with your primary care provider prior to scheduling a plastic surgery consultation.
Choose the right surgeon
This point cannot be over-stated. Most people know to check for "board certification" in plastic surgery, but you will also want to check hospital privileges. Non-qualified persons can perform surgery in their office, but if your "surgeon" is not allowed to perform surgery in a major medical center, they may not have the right credentials or safety record. It is wise to consult with more than one surgeon before making your selection. Never be afraid to ask hard questions. A surgeon may impress you in a consultation, but you need someone who will be willing to work through the post-surgery period with you. You are not buying a product; you are entering a relationship. Use your intuition to help find the surgeon who is the right match for you.
Include your friends and family wisely
Often, family members and friends do not know how to be supportive of your decision to have surgery. Make sure they understand that your decision is personal and that you would very much appreciate their support even if they believe that your appearance is "just fine" now.
Prepare and set realistic expectations
All surgery involves going through a temporary "ugly duckling" phase. You need to expect swelling, bruising, lumps and bumps for a certain period of time. The Internet can be a good source of education about potential risks and costs. Your surgeon should also be able to help you prepare for a specific surgery. A little planning will go a long way in easing your post-operative recovery.
Participate in follow up
It is important to check in frequently with your surgeon. Although improvements in your appearance are usually apparent within a few days following surgery, ultimate results for almost any surgery are not seen until several months later. You should expect to see your surgeon several times in the first month, several times in the first year, and yearly thereafter.
Surgery is the most cost-effective way to enhance your appearance. Maintain a relationship with your surgeon to maximize the quality of your results over your lifetime. Please feel free to contact Dr. Angela Keen for more information about plastic surgery.
