Season's Eatings

5 easy steps to holiday sabotage

We all know the holidays to be a time of celebration with family, friends, music, good will, and in particular “good food.” Those delectable dishes and treats can be enjoyed in moderation. But first, be smart and stay alert to those diet sabotages.

The majority of your diet should be fresh fruits and vegetables; drink lots of water and exercise. Stay committed to your health and you should be able to sail through this season in tiptop shape. Otherwise, here are tips that will help you enhance your weight and your waistline:

Sabatoge #1 Make sure to skip all your meals the day of the holiday party.

That night you can eat all you want guilt free! Sure you’ll wake up bloated, cranky, and lethargic; but last night’s holiday cheese ball and eggnog were well worth the morning withdrawal, right? This cycle will likely continue every night for the next three weeks. But don't worry. A five-pound weight gain is hardly noticeable at all. Just wear baggy clothes to the family Christmas Eve party so you can eat more.

Sabatoge #2 With all the parties, shopping, and events to attend who has time to exercise?

Take the month off! Instead lie around in your pajamas for a few extra hours a day; watch a couple movies; pop some popcorn and add extra marshmallows to your hot cocoa. So what if your energy drops and your body fat increases. There’s always New Year’s Resolutions.

Sabatoge #3 Do you want to be the laughing stock at your friend’s Holiday party?

Put down the veggie salad. Nobody eats fresh fruits and vegetables this time of year. Get with the program! Just grab a spoonful of green beans slathered in butter instead. Yummy.

Sabatoge #4 Tis the season to be merry!

A bottle of wine every night after dinner calms those pesky guilt ridden nerves of sweet holiday indulgence. Of course it will escalate the weight gain and belly fat, but it’s well worth the numbing effect it has on holiday stress.

Sabatoge #5

Your best friend claims to be able to eat anything she wants and not exercise without gaining a pound. In fact, she even loses weight in December!! You should believe every word and try it out for yourself! Chances are slim to none for weightless success on that plan, but who cares? Live for today! You’ll drastically alter your muscle to fat ratio, lowering your metabolism, but you have the rest of the year to reverse time! I'm sure many of us can relate to many of these situations. For those looking to lose or maintain weight, the holidays can be a disastrous food trap. But they don't have to be. Just be aware, commit to your goals, and plan ahead. You can do it.
