Prolozone Therapy

So what is Prolozone? The term was coined by Dr. Frank Shallenberger who is considered perhaps the father of oxidative therapies here in the United States. He received his training in Germany in the early 1980’s. The procedure has been used for many years and for some purposes for decades in many parts of Europe and now many parts of the world. Proli means to rebuild or regenerate. Thus, the word means regeneration or rebuilding of tissues by using ozone. Prolozone is being used by a fairly small number of physicians here in the United States but it is definitely gaining popularity. Prolozone therapy involves injecting a liquid cocktail of nutrients and vitamins followed by the most important ingredient, that of ozone gas or O3. It is used to regenerate damaged tissues, joints, ligaments, and tendons.

Prolozone uses oxygen (O2) mixed with ozone (O3) at certain strengths to stimulate a repair/healing reaction to the region treated. It generally has a 75% success rate at significantly reducing pain long term. Because it stimulates healing it’s not just a short term solution like steroid injections.

The reason that some injuries heal readily and others do not has to do with whether or not that injured tissue receives adequate circulation (blood flow) so that the nutrients needed for repair and healing make it to the injured site and that byproducts of metabolism are readily removed. For proper healing the tissues need certain elements such as vitamins, minerals, and oxygen.

Of these nutrients, by far, the most important is oxygen. Low levels of oxygen cause an accumulation of lactic acid which then leads to pain. Prolozone works in three different ways: First, homeopathic anti-inflammatory medications, vitamins, and minerals are injected into the area to aid in reducing inflammation and swelling, which in and of itself will lead to increased circulation and provides some of the critical nutrients for proper healing. Finally, the area is infiltrated with oxygen mixed with a certain percentage of ozone.

The oxygen alone helps with the healing/reparative process but the ozone is really the magic ingredient. Ozone or O3 is a rather unstable molecule and as such it tends to convert back to oxygen or O2 fairly quickly. During the conversion process a single oxygen molecule is left alone and it causes oxidation to the cells and tissues it is exposed to. Most of us have been trained to believe that oxidation is always a bad thing and that we need to avoid it at all costs and take antioxidants to help overcome the deleterious effects of oxidation. It turns out that oxidation is not the bad player it’s been painted to be. Oxidation, in fact, is very necessary for life. It’s the excess production of free radicals from oxidation that we want to avoid and try to squelch when needed. This added oxidation caused by ozone is the “magic” trigger that wakes up the cells and a myriad of healing mechanisms and reactions that supercharges the healing and reparative processes of the body.

The response to treatment varies from person to person depending on their underlying health and healing abilities, but most people only need 3-5 treatments for most conditions. Back and neck treatments for degenerative disk disease typically require more treatments.

Prolozone works on just about any pain problem you might have including: neck pain, whiplash, degenerative disk disease, low back pain, plantar fasciitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, torn tendons, TMJ syndrome, sciatica, heal spurs, neuromas, tennis elbow, rotator cuff tendonitis, knee injuries, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and most any sports related injury. Because Prolozone treatments also result in cartilage regeneration, the technique is remarkably effective for severe cases of osteoarthritis of the knee or hip.

Prolozone therapy is practiced by relatively few physicians in the United States. For a listing of certified ozone practitioners in your area go to www.oxygenhealingtherapies.com and click on Ozone Doctor Listing.
